Pollokshaws Support Project
Announcing the launch of the Pollokshaws Support Project in January 2019. The project aims to do 4 things for local people:
Provide a free healthy community meal each Wednesday afternoon 12pm-3pm.
Find assistance with issues with money, housing, food, health and wellbeing, welfare, education, and more.
Help to make phone calls, fill in forms, write letters, get online etc.
Accompany people to meetings and activities to help them with understanding and confidence getting about.
So to do this we’re looking for local people who can offer some time and skills to the project, and build the capacity of our local community to help one another out. Can you help with any of the following?
Saying hello and settling attendees in at the meal with some conversation.
Befriending and attending appointments with attendees.
Assisting attendees with phone calls, reading and writing letters and emails, filling in forms, using computers, and getting online.
Assisting with project admin.
Other general duties (eg. cooking, teas and coffee making, leafletting etc).
No specific experience is necessary but we will be looking for people with good communication skills and the ability to offer time on Wednesday afternoons.
Training for volunteers began on Wednesday 14th November, and will run for the next four weeks, and two weeks in the New Year. For further details and to sign up as a volunteer please email email@example.com
OUR REGULAR EVENTS & ACTIVITIES ROUNDUP
FREE: Pollokshaws Community Choir
The choir is going strong at around 16 regular members, they will sing for the Cathcart Stroke group on 27th Nov at 1pm, and for the residents at the Mcarthy Stone sheltered housing on Riverford Road, date in December TBA. We have also been invited with other groups to cheer up Central Station with some festive singing on Sunday 16th Dec as part of an afternoon of fundraising for hospital radio. Open to all, the choir meets every Monday from 1330-1430 at the Hub — Angela
£1.50: Easy Exercise @ Pollokshaws Hub
The Easy Exercise classes have been really well attended recently by around 10-16 ladies led by our instructor Veronica. The sessions are excellent for gentle toning and conditioning, and there always seems to be a lot of blethering during the brief intervals. Meet Tuesdays 1030-1130 and Thursdays 1400-1500.
£2.50: Yoga @ Pollokshaws Hub
Caroline’s two flow yoga sessions have become very popular recently with 10-15 people attending either the Tuesday evening session 1800-1900 or the Thursday lunchtime session 1215-1300, some attending both regularly. We had excellent cover while Caroline was on holiday last month so special thanks to Louise @ Battlefield Yoga, Laura, and Sandra for their brilliant practise sessions.
Due to popularity we are considering expanding our Yoga to more weekly sessions, and perhaps offering two different levels of practise. We need to know if people want this though so please let us know if you want this!
FREE: Pollokshaws Community Coffee Mornings
Maggie, Joyce, and Anne have been excellent hosts recently, offering tea, coffee, cakes, biscuits, and chat to local residents droppin-in on Wednesday mornings 1000-1200. This has been a great way for new people to get to know what’s happening in the area, and many have found their way into other activities or support from this.
FREE: Pollokshaws Community Garden
Garden participation varies according to seasons and weather, but we always need help! October to February is quieter but there are plenty of jobs. We’re currently planting onions and garlic for next year’s harvest and putting tulip bulbs and new winter bedding into the containers. Pruning and tidying gets us out in the autumn sun for fresh air and gentle exercise, and if the weather is awful we always have indoor tasks, great company and friendly chat over the essential tea break!. Over the winter we’re planning to build 10 new raised beds. We meet every Friday 1000-1300 — Angela
FREE: Pollokshaws Men’s Shed
The Shed currently focuses on woodwork on Friday afternoons led by Robert, and is a small but stable group of around 6 regulars plus those that manage occasionally. In September they installed a new archway entrance for the Hub and Garden, complete with hand-carved sign, which has received excellent reviews from locals. Presently they are working on raised beds for the garden, and creating lettering for the exterior of the Hub. Some of the men prefer to work on their own carving spoons or building bird-boxes, but the camaraderie is excellent. The Friday group meets 1200-1500.
We’re considering extending the Shed to other afternoons to incorporate other skills and recreational activities (eg. games, metalwork, glasswork, etc). Please let us know what you would like to see at your local Shed!
FREE: Pollokshaws Needlecraft Group
This is undoubtedly the noisiest group, rivalling even the excellent choir! This group is the best attended of all our activities, led by Patricia, and is always looking for new members. Last month they installed a new patchwork knitted banner for the Hub and are currently working on a collaborative blanket project . They meet every Friday 1300-1600 at the Hub.
CALL-OUTS & OTHER THINGS
Pollokshaws Hub maintenance & repairs
We recently had the water tank removed from the roof of the building. This was kindly organised by the people at The Burrell Collection and the contractor for their renovation Kier. This will hopefully reduce the water ingress and dampness we’ve been suffering from, and hopefully also reduce our heating costs!
We are continuing our own renovation inside (some to freshen up, some to repair water damage). This involves some painting, plastering, basic joinery, basic plumbing etc. If you’d like to volunteer for our next projects day please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll make sure you’re on our call-up list!
That’s all folks!
From the Team at Pollokshaws Community Hub and Garden
